Harvest
This year to celebrate Harvest we found out a lot more about our environment. The whole school had an 'Autumn-watch' style visit our to local parks. The following week we met together in church to celebrate harvest with readings, prayers, songs, art and poems. We collected items to give to the local hostel which supports homeless people in Maidstone.
We've even helped the Kent Messenger test theories about Apple Bobbing - see the edition from Thursday 3rd November for a page 2 article about our investigation.
Children in Need
Help us raise lots for Children in Need on 18th November by wearing something spotty to school and buying a spotty cake or biscuit. We need donations of cakes too!
Violins, recorders, ocarinas and anything else that plays!
Children in our school began learning how to play the violin in 2008. The Kent Messenger newspaper was also interested. Click here to read their report. Some of the children decided to continue into a second year and did so well that they played to parents and friends at our open afternoon and concert in July. Not to be outdone, all the children in KS2 played or sang in the concert.
From September 2009, children in KS2 will all be learning to play musical instruments. Year 3 will learn the ocarina, Year 4 are learning the recorder, Year 5 are aspiring to be djembe and samba drummers and Year 6 are learning the violin.
Performances
In the summer we completed a project with the Hazlitt theatre in Maidstone to stage a drama based upon the experiences of evacuees in World War 2. Children in Year 5 and 6 worked together on the drama and gave a stunning performance at the Hazlitt in May 2011.
Children in Year 3 and 4 have now staged a number of short musical plays to enhance their learning. They started with 'The Selfish Giant' and have now provided insight into the lives of the Romans and the Greeks with their inventiveness. Well done everyone!
We will be Carol Singing again this December in The Mall and the Star Arcade. Last Christmas we even sang at Starbucks in the Village Hotel to great appreciation of all who were present. We had a huge audience by the time we finished and many visitors expressed their thanks for our moving performance.
The Schools Prom
Monday 10th November 2008 was a very special day for our choir of Year 5 and 6 children who took part in the Schools Prom at the Royal Albert Hall. It was the end product of weeks of rehearsal of some specially composed Autumn songs for the Kent Massed Choir of 500 children, sponsored by 'Sing Up.' Parents joined us for the concert and everyone took part in the traditional finale, singing 'Land of Hope and Glory.'
Well done to everyone who took part - a proud day for us all to remember.
Carol Singing
Our KS2 choir will be singing carols around Maidstone in December, helping to raise money for charities and delighting shoppers in the Mall. Do come and hear our singing and join in if you know the carols.
