Wake and Shake

First on the timetable is wake and shake, this is a very energetic one to get you all ready for a day of home learning.

Phonics

You have all been fantastic at doing your phonics every day. This week the focus has been adding ‘s’ on the end of words and blending the sounds to read them. I have seen lots of great photos and videos of children practising this, well done!

Perhaps at the end of today’s lesson you might like to have a try at one of these activities:

This is an I-Spy bottle: you need a bottle, some rice or small beads, and then either pictures of objects or small objects to put inside. Then you shake it and say what you can see and have a go at writing the word.

For this activity draw a pirate map, perhaps a grown up at home can write some letters for you. Then on the treasure chest or the ‘x’ you can write what the word is once you have blended the sounds.

Write letters on plastic cups, arrange them in different ways. Which CVC words can you make? Perhaps you could write a list of them.

Handwriting

Today’s number combines two numbers that we have been learning to write and it is number 10. To write a 10 we need to use the numbers 1 and 0. Now remember the number rhyme for 1 is ‘start at the top and down we run, that’s the way we make a 1’ and for 0 it is ‘round and round and round we go when we’re home we have a zero’.

Before we start writing, can you count to 10? Can you find 10 objects in your house? Perhaps you could try and make the number 10 using the objects.

R.E.

This term in R.E we are looking at stories from the new Testament. We find the New Testament in the Bible, the Bible is the holy book for Christians.

Last week we learned about disciples. Can you remember what a disciple is? Can you remember the names of any disciples? A disciple is a follower of Jesus. Our learning last week focused on the story of the ‘Miracle catch of fish’. This story helped us to learn that Jesus was a good friend, and he gathered a group of men (his disciples) to help him share God’s message.

Today we are focusing on the story of the ‘Zacchaeus’ (Luke 19: 1-10).

Wow, I wonder…how do you think Zacchaeus felt when Jesus went to his house for tea? How do you think the other people felt when Jesus spoke to Zacchaues?

-Organise your own tea party.

-Write invitations to your tea party, for example you might invite some of your favourite toys.

-Look at different types of tree, what does a sycamore tree look like?

I wonder…what helps us keep us up straight? What protects some of our organs (such as our heart)? What helps us move?

That’s right……our skeleton!!

Does every living thing have a skeleton? Can you name a living thing that does not have one?

Today we are going to start by looking at dinosaur skeletons. Can you match the correct dinosaur skeleton to the right dinosaur?

Perhaps at the end of today’s lesson you might like to play a game of tricky word splat. You will need to make flashcards of the tricky words you know, then get someone at home to call out a tricky word and see how quickly you can splat it!!

Handwriting

Today’s number is number 9. To write a number 9 the rhyme is “make a loop and then a line that’s the way we make a 9”.

Can you try writing it in the air? Can you write it big? Can you write it small? Now practise writing the number 9, remember it doesn't always have to be just pen and paper you use have a go at trying a different way today.

Remember to use your phonics knowledge to help you write the words (if you are not sure how to write a word listen carefully to the sounds, it does not matter if it is not spelt 100% correct, as we are still learning...for example you know the digraph 'ee', so you might write Harry as 'Haree').

Perhaps you could draw a picture to go with your drawing too

What feelings can you name? Can you make these faces? Can you name some of the feelings on the feelings mat?

For your activity today, I would like you to make your own feelings chart, here are some examples. You need to make sure you have either your name or a picture of you on your chart so you can move it anytime you need to, you may also like to add your family members onto this too.

A feelings chart helps to define and explain how we are feeling, sometimes we may not want to talk about this but sometimes if we are feeling sad or worried it is good to talk to others, as I am pretty sure they will be able to help you.

Listen to the story of ‘Dinosaurs love underpants’:

When listening to the story I would like you to listen very carefully to words that are used to describe the dinosaurs, such as huge and scariest. After listening to the story can you make a list of the words you heard? Or if you can’t remember perhaps you could make up your own list of words that you would use to describe dinosaurs.

 Then can you add labels to your dinosaur to describe it, like my example below. You may like to use Non-Fiction books or the Internet to help you find out some facts about your chosen dinosaur.

P.E

Let’s begin with a dinosaur themed warm up, pick a movement you may choose to run, stomp, stride or move on all fours. When the adult at home shouts ‘ROAR’ you need to make the smallest shape, you can! When they shout ‘Egg’ can you roll into an egg shape and roll from side to side? (there is a photo if you’re not sure on the egg roll).

Now you are all warmed up, it is time for the main activity. Today in P.E we are going to focus on learning to jump and land on two feet. First practise the different types of jumping; star jump, half turn jump, tuck jump, leap, hop, bunny hop, frog. Remember when you land you need to try and land on two feet. Perhaps you could go outside and practise jumping off obstacles in different ways (if it is safe to do so, and make sure you have an adult with you).

Today in phonics we continue to work on blending words, this week we are adding ‘s’ to the end of words.

Handwriting:

Today we are going to focus on writing the number 7. The number rhyme for this is ‘across the sky and down from heaven that’s the way we make a 7!’.

As well as practising with pens or pencils or any other writing equipment, I have also found some other fun ways to help us with our number formation (and our counting too), for this you will need some foil. Here they are:

If you missed yesterday’s TEAMS session you can catch up by watching the video. Yesterday we looked at comparing the weights of objects. Can you remember what the scale was called that I used? That’s right a balance scale. What words can we use to describe the weight of an object?

Your activity for today:

1. Make your own set of balance scales (See examples). There are a few different ways you can do this by using objects from in your home.
2. Collect objects from your home.
3. Weigh them using your balance scale. Which is the heaviest? Which is the lightest? Can you sort the objects by weight?
4. Challenge: Can you find out how much they weigh? You may want to use coins, Lego bricks, cubes (if you have them). Just make sure that the object you are using to weigh with is always the same. Then record your findings in whichever way you choose, it could be by using a table or picture.

I wonder….do you know where Dinosaurs come from?

As you can see Dinosaurs come from eggs, what else can you think of that comes from an egg?

Your task for today is to create your very own dinosaur nest with eggs. There are a variety of different ways you can do this, and these are just examples, if you have another idea then that is fantastic.

-Making Dinosaur eggs and a nest: Dinosaur eggs
Mix one cup of used coffee grounds, one cup of plain flour, 1/2 cup of salt, 1/4 cup of sand and 3/4 cup of water. Knead the mixture into dough and shape into either potato-shaped or spherical eggs between 15–30cms long. Bake the eggs at a low temperature until hard or air dry for 2–3 days.

-You could use different craft materials.

-You could even go outside and use natural objects to recreate a dinosaur nest and eggs.

Here are some questions to think about when you are making your nest and eggs:

• What shapes are the eggs?
• What type of dinosaur do you think might have laid the eggs?
• How can we find out how long the dinosaur eggs are?
• What size dinosaur do you think might have laid the eggs?

Our learning objective for maths today is to explore heaviest and lightest.

Have a look at the picture, the man has a suitcase. Do you think his suitcase is heavy or light? How can you tell? What could be inside? The lady also has a suitcase, she can carry hers easily. Do you think her suitcase is heavy or light? How can you tell and what do you think is inside?

Activity: Choose an item from your home it can be anything you like- I’ve chosen an apple. Use your hands to feel the weight of it. Now, go and find something that feels lighter than your item. Once you have done this, can you find something that is heavier than it? You can continue playing this game, creating two piles of objects- Lighter and Heavier. If you want to be extra clever, you could have a go at putting them into a table and writing the words!

I wonder, are larger items always heavier? What do you think?

Last week our handwriting focus was on number formation from numbers 1-5. I wonder if you can guess what our focus might be on this week?...

We are going to practise our number formation of numbers 6-10!

Our learning objective for RE this week is to understand what is special about Jesus and the message he brings? Today we will be learning about the disciples. First of all, talk to your grown-ups about friendship, who are your friends? Why did you choose them to be your friends? What is special about your friends?

Talk to your grown-ups about the story. What did you like? What were you surprised/puzzled by?

The word DISCIPLE means a follower of Jesus. Jesus chose 12 men to be his special friends – his disciples. It is important for you to know that:

• The disciples were ordinary people
• The disciples gave up everything to follow Jesus.
• Christians today try to follow Jesus’ teachings.
• Christians believe they are like the disciples.
• Christians believe Jesus welcomed everybody and they should do the same.

Activity

Play an active following game with your grown-ups like ‘Follow my Leader’ or ‘Simon Says’ where you have to listen, copy and follow. Afterwards discuss how you felt during the game. Was it tricky to listen and follow? Imagine it’s a bit like when the disciples decided to follow Jesus. Do they think that would have been difficult?

Today we are continuing to practise our number formation. We are now ready to write number 5! The rhyme to go with this number is ‘Down and around, then a flag on high, that’s the way we make a 5’. For a challenge today, I wonder if you could write the numbers in order from 1 to 5?

EAD/PSED

Today I would like you to get creative! You are going to make your own board game ready to play with somebody at home!

You can make your creation in the style of an existing board game such as Ludo or Snakes and Ladders. Or, you could make up your own! You can use a range of materials to produce your board game, maybe you could use blocks to make a game of Jenga or toys to make Guess Who!

When writing instructions, you need to remember these things:

• A list of materials needed.
• Bullet points or numbers for each point.
• Bossy words.
• Capital Letters to start.
• Full stops to finish.

Our learning objective for PE this week is to experiment with moving in different ways!

Our learning objective for Literacy this week is to write a sentence about our half term.

First, talk to your adult and remember what you did over the holidays. Did you enjoy your Christmas Day? What else did you do? Did you eat any yummy food or watch any nice movies? Now, verbally construct a sentence that you would like to write.

Once you have decided I would love you to have a go at writing your sentence for me. If this is a little tricky, you could write the key word or the initial sounds that you can hear. I would also like you to draw and colour in a lovely picture to go alongside your sentence. Have a look at my example- but I am sure you can do a lot better than me!

Remember that when we are writing a sentence we need to begin with a capital letter and end with a full stop. Don’t forget your finger spaces and your best handwriting too!

Maths:

Our learning intention for Maths today is: to compare numbers to 5 and share objects.

First, I would like you to show your adult 3 fingers on your hand. Can you show them less than 3? Can you show them more than 3? I wonder if you can use both hands to show a different way of making 3? Can you repeat this activity by doing jumps instead of showing fingers?

For your main activity today, I would like you to have a go at this challenge:

First can you make a set of dot shapes (see the example given). Now turn them all over and see if you can find the shape with 4 dots? Once you have found it can you find a shape with more than 4 dots? Can you find a shape with fewer than 4 dots? Can you put the shapes in order?

Challenge:

Ask your adult to hide one of the shapes. Can you work out which one is missing?

Topic:

Our topic for this term is a very exciting one and we know that lots of you are going to love it! It…is…DINOSAURS!!!

So today we are going to start getting to know all about them with an introduction to the topic.

I wonder if you could tell me 5 facts that you have already learnt about dinosaurs. Perhaps you would like to tell me some of their names, what they eat or how long ago they lived. You could record yourself saying your facts out loud or maybe you would like to have a go at writing some down. You could even draw a picture.

In school we begin our day of learning with our daily phonics session, this week our focus in phonics is going to be practising our blending using the letters and sounds we have been learning. Blending is the skill used to help us read words.

Maths:

Our learning intention for Maths today is: To compare numbers to 5.

First, I would like you to find 2 toys (these may be teddy bears or 2 figures). Now I would like you to look around your house for some objects I wonder can you find 10? Now it is time to share these objects between the two toys, how many do they have each? What would happen if you took one object away? Would it be fair then? Who has the most and who has the fewest? You can repeat this with different amounts if you wish.

For your main activity today I would like you to have a go at this challenge:

You have 10 seconds to use objects in your house to make a tower (you may want to use lego, or bricks, if you do not have these perhaps you could use cushions or teddies). When the 10 seconds is up count how many objects you have in your tower, can you write this number down?

Next, you are going to have a competition with someone in your house. Again, you each have 10 seconds to build a tower, but this time I would like you to compare both towers. Think about these questions: who has more? Who has fewer?

Challenge:

Can you make a tower with 5 objects?

Can you make a tower with more than 5 objects?

Can you make a tower with fewer than 5 objects?

Music:

In class we have been learning Makaton. We have learned how to sign for some everyday words such as: please, thank you, drink, home, mum, dad, milk, banana, orange, pear, carrot, toilet and many more. I wonder can you show the grown ups at home some of the Makaton signs we have been learning? If you need some help remembering, here is the link:
