Lesson 10: map a character's emotion

In this lesson you will:

• Investigate Jack’s character and suggest reasons for his choices (based on the text)

• Identify different emotions and feelings experienced by Jack

You should have read Part 3: Summer ( Weird Kids to The Egyptian Tomb) before the start of this lesson. If you haven't done so, please go back to Lesson 9 and download the text or listen.

If we were all in class together, we would have a class discussion about Jack. You might want to call a friend and have your own discussion, make notes on a piece of paper or talk about the following points with a member of your house.

Think about the events that happen that change Jack's mind over time, from the initial phonecall from Mr Tushman and not wanting to be singled out for the task of showing Auggie around the school, to his growing friendship with Auggie. Consider his statement that he would rather spend time with Auggie than the other children in Grade 5. This shows a great journey in his thinking! Can you pinpoint what it is that makes this change in Jack happen? 

Why does this change occur in Jack but not to Justin or even Charlotte?

Using Part 4: Jack, create an emotion graph to show the changes in Jack throughout the course of the story thus far. 

Here is an example of an emotion graph, using the story of Cinderella. This is very basic but I hope it gives you an idea of what to do - identify key points in the story and plot how the character feels. This example uses pictures to depict emotions but I wonder if you can include adjectives which will describe Jack's emotions and feelings. You could, as an extra challenge, shade the graph using colour to depict emotions. If you are stuck, scroll to the top of the page and look at what I want you to do in this lesson - this is about identifying Jack's emotions and feelings and thinking about how and why they change.
