Lesson 6: develop understanding of precepts
In this lesson you will
Read Choose Kind. If you can, read aloud to someone else (an adult or a young sibling).
What is a precept? (Click the word) How would you put that definition in your own words? Write it down.
At the end of the book, the author provides a list of all of Mr Browne's precepts: you can find them all here.
Mr Browne's first precept is;
'when given the choice between being right and being kind, choose kind.’
Spend a few moments thinking about what that means and when it might apply. Have you ever been in a situation where this precept was useful? Jot down some notes about this (normally I would be asking you to talk to your partner about this - is there someone with you who you can discuss this with?).
At the end of the last lesson, I asked you to find the lyrics to your favourite song or section from a book: you need those now.
Read the lyrics of your favourite song: is there a line which has an important message or interesting saying? Does the song have a message which is useful to you? Use the lyrics, or section of your own book, to write your own precept, a saying that is important to live by. If you are stuck for ideas, write the first thing that comes to mind. You can always edit and improve it as you think about it.
