LI: to use powerful adjectives and verbs
Listen and read the next chapter of our book The Phoenix Code. Click on the book cover to go to Mrs Irvine’s recording. How close was your prediction from yesterday? Might it still happen? What is going to happen next? Have you noticed how each chapter ends on a mini cliff-hanger to get you to read the next chapter? Sneaky!
Now we are going to do some writing. Close your eyes and imagine you are standing at the entrance to a long forgotten tomb. You are going to be the first person to enter the tomb.
Think about what you will see and hear. What can you smell? Use your powerful adjectives and verbs to ensure your writing is amazing!
Compare these two pieces of writing, a first draft to get some ideas down and the improved version with good adjectives and verbs.
1st draft
I went in to the tomb through the small hole. It was dark and cold inside. The air was dry and it smelled bad. As I was passed a torch, the light helped me to see more details.
Edited version
I ducked through the narrow hole we had made into the forgotten tomb. My body blocked any light coming from the space behind me and the room was as dark as midnight. The air inside was freezing, a complete contrast to the scorching desert above and the tiny, ancient dust, which I disturbed with my feet, rose and tickled my nose. As someone handed me a flickering torch, the details of the tomb were slowly revealed to me.
Can you see how I changed and adapted my initial ideas to improve my work? Try writing down your basic ideas first and then re-writing them to improve.
We are going to continue with this tomorrow so you do not need to complete it today – aim for a couple of exciting paragraphs and don’t forget to use some of the powerful verbs and adjectives you have collected from the book.
To help you further, here is an adjective word mat and a verb word mat with some extra ideas you could use.
PE
Our PE topic this term is Gymnastics. We will be looking at shapes we can make with our bodies, how we can move from one space to another and jumping and rolling.
First you need to warm up your bodies, try this Go noodle to get started
https://app.gonoodle.com/activities/warm-ups?sp=category&sn=Workout&st=categories&sid=42
Ok, for today I want you to think about the letters in the alphabet. How could you make them with your body? Some of them are obvious, for example the letter I is just standing up straight, but what about letters like B or K? Can you make the whole alphabet with your body? If you have someone else around, you could try spelling out words and they guess what they are to see if your body shapes are accurate. Don’t forget to take some photos of your favourite letters or the letters of your name to send to your teacher, we would love to see them!

L.I: To observe and record designs for Egyptian jewellery
L.I : To Know the achievements of Ancient Egypt
Jewellery was important in Ancient Egypt. The Egyptians mined precious stones and metals from quarries in the deserts they called the “ Red Land.”
Pharaohs, the kings and queens of Egypt, wore elaborate head dresses and the most beautiful jewellery on their chests to show how important they were. They had to look their best as the people regarded them as god-like!
Egyptians also believed in wearing good luck charms such as the Utchat and scarabs (an Egyptian beetle)to protect them from bad luck in their everyday lives. They also wore ear rings and items we do today. Can you see the blue beetle holding a red jewel that symbolises the sun in the third picture?
Lapis Lazuli, a beautiful blue stone that was imported, was used to add colour to necklaces, bracelets and sarcophagi and gold, which the Egyptians worked from the deserts surrounding the Nile.
Task: Choose one or more of the pictures above and make some sketches of it. Look at the shapes, the surfaces and the details. If you want to see these pictures in better detail, visit the link below, where you will find lots of other images of Ancient Egyptian jewellery:
You can use pencils, pastels, charcoal, paint, felt pen and do black and white versions and colour to complete your sketches and make a final picture.
Don’t forget to take photos of your work for the class page blog!
Now towards the end of the day have some time to reflect as you watch our Collective Worship

LI: to know that writers choose words and language to create effect.
Look at your list of words from yesterday. What makes them good words to use. Why do you think the writer has used those words instead of others?
If they writer had used boring words, the story wouldn’t be the same, look at this version of the first two paragraphs written without interesting words:
As Ryan Flint looked past all the people in the tunnel he was happy.
It wasn’t every day you got to look inside a very old, forgotten room.
Now we are going to listen and read the second chapter of our new book The Phoenix Code. Click on the book cover to go to Mrs Irvine’s recording.

Can you find more adjectives and verbs to add to your list?
Here are some examples to get you started:
Verbs: perched, sliced, trudged
Adjectives: scientific, Jackal-headed, gleaming
Think about why the writer has used those words and write about why they make for a good opening to a book. How does it make the reader feel with the detailed description and exciting vocabulary? What other devices has the writer used to make you want to carry on with the book?

LI: To investigate how we preserve food
Just as the Egyptians preserved the dead Pharaohs, today we still use different methods of preserving things.
Think about food. What do we do to keep it fresh and edible? Make a list and ask your adult to go through it with you. How does each method preserve food?
One item of food which can go off very quickly is milk. Where do you usually keep milk? Of course, we keep it in the fridge. We are going to look at why. This investigation will take a few days, we need to set it up and then check back on it over a few days.
For this investgation, you need four (or more) small cups and some milk.
Pour a small amount of milk in to each cup. Try to make sure there is the same amount in each to keep the test fair. Then place the cups in different places. For example, you could keep one in the fridge (as a control), one on a windowsill, one in a warm cupboard and one outside. Make sure other members of your family know they are for a science experiment so they don’t accidentally tidy them away.
Which cup do you think will go off first? Make some predictions and make sure to check your cups regularly to find out if your predictions were correct.
You could record it as a table like this:

Don’t forget to let love in
Today we are going to think about the people we love.
Thank about who you love in your life. How do you show it to them? It could be a daily profession as you leave the house “ Bye, love you! or it could be in more abstract ways, such as helping with the housework or just being quiet when they are busy. There are lots of ways to show love. Today do something special for one of the people you love such as write them a letter, draw them a picture, make them something to show them how much you love them.
Now towards the end of the day have some time to reflect as you watch our Collective Worship/ Click on the candle to go to the collective worship page

Well done! What a good first day back!
Mrs Irvine
This week in Nightingales we have been writing dairy entries based on the 'True Story of the Three Little Pigs' which is told from the wolfs point of view. He claims he is not a big, bad wolf but has been framed and that he only blew down the houses because he had a cold! To help the children with their writing we tried to remember the story using actions to help us, see the video below.
Maths has kept its focus on subtraction, learning different ways to subtract, how to make exchanging easier and methods of checking our answer to name a few!
We have also been looking closely at buildings in the Maidstone area and using our newly learned sketching skills to begin to think about their texture and shading.
We had a shared PE lesson with the year 3s from Kingfishers, and focused on teamwork and helping each other in order to succeed, it was great fun trying to fit four people inside a small hoop!
The rest of the week we have been taking Pixl tests to show how much we have learned. Everyone has tried really hard and they should all be proud of themselves!
This week in Nightingales we have been doing chatty testy whatnotts which have focused on addition and subtraction, punctuation and retrieval. We played a great game of rounders in PE, despite the weather trying to get us wet. We also thought about shading and using pencils for different textures in art, drawing leaves and the death mask of Tutankhamun.
We also looked at rounding to 10 and 100 which come with a great little poem to help us remember what to do!
This week in Nightingales By Lily and Joana
This week in Nightingales, we wrote poems about a picture of the sea from our book, Gregory Cool. On Thursday we had PE and we did Rounders.
We have been making a junk model hospital called the Evelina Hospital which is in London.
We have also been learning about ordering numbers and today we learned about Roman Numerals and it was really confusing!
